Ouch!

Alison cut off a small part of her finger (cutting cucumbers this morning, very dangerous) and is currently headed to Urgent Care. She’ll be back in the office after some antiseptic and bandages.

This is the standard treatment, called "conservative" or "secondary healing". There are serveral "standard treatments", though. Another is to seal the wound over with "Xeroform", a gauze soak in soft parafin and bacitracin, that's what I got. The treatment for fingertip amputation is the same as for burns, namely "moist healing", which has been practiced for thousands of years. The wound is covered and kept moist. If you look in the burn section of the drugstore, you will find semi-occlusive film (it breathes and slowly lets moisture through) -- there are different brands, Tegaderm and Nexcare (3M) are two. In moist healing, wound is closed up and allowed to heal in its natural fluids, which self-debride (remove dead tissue) and provide a soup that does the healing, called "exudate". One benefit is the dressing is not changed as often, every fourth day or so, and it is waterproof so you can wear it in the shower.
